Spotlight on Ledger’s Tonics!
We are loving the Ledger’s range of premium tonic waters!
Inspired by the explorer Charles Ledger, who in the 19th century searched in the forests of Peru for the mythical seeds of the Cinchona Tree, whose ingredient – quinine, was used by the Incas in a potion to cure malaria. He later discovered whilst exploring Bolivia, a variety of the Cinchona Tree whose bark contained an even more powerful quinine, later named after him as Cinchona Ledgeriana. He realised that the Cinchona Trees were being cut down without being replaced, endangering the future of the species and resulting in a ban on the export of Cinchona seeds. Charles and his servant went on a mission to collect Cinchona seeds in order to send them to his brother in London, entrusting him to spread the seeds across Europe to ensure the species’ survival. The majority of these seeds were sold to the Dutch government, the rest were sent out to India and Australia.
Thanks to the foresight of Charles Ledger, Cinchona Trees still grow today in India and Java, and quinine from the Cinchona Ledgeriana variety is considered to be the best quinine out there!
In the pioneering spirit of Charles Ledger, the makers of Ledger’s Tonics decided to use Stevia, an organic plant-based sweetener in their tonics, offering a low calorie alternative compared to other tonics on the market, and the subtle flavour of Stevia also complements and enhances the bitterness of the quinine. Ledger’s Tonics also decided to innovate and introduce subtle flavours – producing three fantastic flavoured tonics as well as the plain Ledger’s Tonic.
Characterized by their very fine bubble and unique smooth taste thanks to the Stevia, the Ledger’s range includes:
Ledger’s Tonic & Tangerine
Ledger’s Tonic & Liquorice
Ledger’s Tonic & Cinnamon
And we absolutely love them! Check out our Ledger’s link for further information about each tonic and what type of Gin to combine them with for a new gin and tonic taste experience!
